Academic integrity and acceptable use
Last updated: 2026-10-14
This statement is part of the Terms of Service for Handnotes at handnotes.ai.
What Handnotes is for
Handnotes makes study notes in your own handwriting: worked examples, summaries and explanations of the material you give it, written by an AI model and set down in a handwriting fitted from your own letters. It is a tool for studying and for your own work: revising a topic, seeing a problem worked through, keeping notes you understand, and producing your own material in your own hand.
What it is not for
Handwriting does not make work yours. Submitting notes or answers produced with Handnotes as your own graded work, where your school, university or employer does not allow it, is your responsibility and may breach their rules on academic integrity, with consequences for you that we cannot undo. Before you hand anything in, check what your institution and your instructor allow; many require you to disclose any use of AI tools, and some forbid it. Where in doubt, ask them first.
Do not use Handnotes to pass off AI-written work as your own in any setting where that is dishonest, to help someone else do so, or to disguise the origin of work you did not do.
Mistakes
The notes are written by an AI model and can be wrong, including in their working. They are a starting point for your understanding, not an authority. Check anything that matters against your course material.
Acceptable use
As well as the terms, you agree not to use Handnotes to:
- cheat in an assessment, exam or any setting where AI assistance is not allowed;
- upload material you have no right to use, such as another person's handwriting or copyrighted course material you are not permitted to share;
- get around usage limits, email confirmation, payment or security, including by sharing an account or signing up with made-up addresses to collect more free notes;
- put a load on the service that gets in other people's way;
- break the law or harm others.
What we do about abuse
We may suspend or close accounts used in breach of this statement or the terms, and refuse service to people who have done so. If we do, we will tell you by email, and you can still ask us for a copy of your data. We do not monitor what you hand in; we act on what we see on our own service and on reports we receive.
